Why Skin Diagnoses & Biopsies Matter

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the U.S., and conditions like melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, eczema, psoriasis, and autoimmune rashes can often mimic one another. A visual exam alone may not be enough—a biopsy is sometimes the only way to confirm or rule out serious skin issues.

Our team performs detailed assessments supported by:

  • Full-body skin exams
  • Mole checks for atypical growths
  • Evaluation of persistent rashes or inflammatory skin changes
  • Same-day biopsy procedures, when appropriate

If you're dealing with an undiagnosed spot, mole, or rash, schedule your skin cancer screening and let us help you find answers.

When Is a Biopsy Needed?

Biopsies are recommended when:

  • A mole or lesion appears abnormal in shape, color, or size
  • A sore doesn’t heal after several weeks
  • A rash is unresponsive to treatment or spreading
  • A new or changing growth raises concern for skin cancer
  • A previous condition is worsening or not responding to therapy

Biopsies help confirm the diagnosis of:

  • Melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers
  • Actinic keratoses
  • Psoriasis, eczema, and lichen planus
  • Autoimmune skin diseases
  • Fungal and bacterial infections

What Happens During a Skin Biopsy?

We perform three primary biopsy types at our Prairie Village clinic:

1. Shave Biopsy

Used for raised lesions or superficial concerns. A thin layer of tissue is shaved off for testing, quick and nearly painless.

2. Punch Biopsy

Ideal for rashes or deeper lesions. A circular tool removes a small core of skin, often requiring one or two stitches.

3. Excisional Biopsy

Used when a full lesion needs removal for complete analysis, particularly in suspected melanoma cases.

All biopsies are performed in-office with local anesthesia. The procedure usually takes 15–30 minutes, and patients return to normal activities the same day.

What Happens After the Biopsy?

  • Pathology review: Samples are sent to a dermatopathology lab.
  • Results: Typically available within 7–10 days.
  • Follow-up: We call you with your results and next steps.
  • If the biopsy is positive for skin cancer, we offer:

    • Mohs Surgery for precise cancer removal
    • Reconstructive surgery for sensitive areas
    • Ongoing skin monitoring and education

FAQs: Diagnosis & Biopsies

What is the process of a biopsy?

After a local numbing injection, a small sample of skin is removed using a shave, punch, or excisional method. The tissue is sent to a lab for analysis, and you'll receive results within a week or two.

What conditions require a biopsy?

Biopsies are used to diagnose skin cancers, chronic rashes, psoriasis, infections, and autoimmune skin diseases when clinical exams are inconclusive.

Is biopsy a painful process?

The biopsy site is numbed beforehand, so you should only feel mild pressure. Some tenderness or scabbing may occur afterward but is usually mild and short-lived.

What happens if a biopsy is positive?

A positive biopsy means abnormal or malignant cells were found. Your provider will recommend next steps, such as surgical excision, Mohs surgery, or close monitoring based on the diagnosis.
